Paddlers have a wide range of waterways to choose from in
Victoria. The upper reaches of the Snowy River provide great wilderness
trips through the Snow Gorge. The Mitchell River, which traverses the
national park of the same name north of Bairnsdale, is a
low-volume waterway that offers interesting but relatively straightforward
paddling. Also popular are the Mitta Mitta River in the north-east and the Indi,
part of the headwaters of the Murray in the north-east. The Murray Gates (on the
Murray itself) also offer challenges; further downstream, the Murray is suitable
for family trips in open Canadian canoes. Also at the relaxed end of the scale
is the Goulburn River in the Goulburn Valley, where regular stops can be made at
local wineries. Perhaps surprisingly,
Melbourne’s Yarra River also offers good
paddling.
