Due to the roughness of many of the state’s back roads, mountain biking is
a particularly popular style of cycling in
South Australia. Favoured destinations include the
Adelaide Hills and other parts of the Mount
Lofty Ranges, the Fleurieu Peninsula, the Barossa Valley, the
Flinders Ranges
and Kangaroo Island. Mountain biking is not permitted in national parks or
conservation areas, however.
The most famous cycling route in
South Australia is the Mawson Trail, which
stretches for 497 miles from the heart of
Adelaide to Blinman in the
Flinders Ranges. Following pre-existing 4WD tracks and dirt roads for much of the way, it
includes many challenging hills and some technical sections, most notably in the
northern half.
