Although there is no shortage of peaks and cliffs in
Queensland,
it’s still something of a challenge for climbers to find rock faces that
are not overgrown with lush foliage or too exposed to the fierce tropical
sun.
Queensland’s best known rock formations are the Glasshouse Mountains,
a group of volcanic plugs that rises dramatically from the lowlands
bordering the Sunshine coast. Although many of the cliff faces here are
loose and therefore dangerous, there are several safe but challenging
climbs. The most popular climbing area in
Queensland, however, is Frog
Buttress, a relatively small cliff near Boonah, south of Ipswich. For less
strenuous outings,
Brisbane-base climbers travel to the granite boulders and
slabs of Girraween National Park near the
New South Wales Border. In the north
of the state, Townsville climbers have established many exciting routes on
nearby Mount Stuart.
