Although most of
Tasmania’s scalable terrain lies in the middle
of remote wilderness, enough of it is accessible to make rock climbing a
popular sport on the island. Among the most climber-friendly rocks are the
granite slabs and cliffs of Freycinet National Park, which draw
mountaineers from the mainland and beyond. Greater challenges are to be found on
the basalt cliffs of Mount Wellington, which towers over
Hobart. Basalt
formations are the commonest kind in
Tasmania and generally provide enjoyable
but difficult climbing; among the best know are the cliffs surrounding the Ben Lomond plateau near Launceston. Long, serious climbs have also been undertaken
on the faces of some of
Tasmania’s highest mountains, such as Geryon, Frenchmans
Cap, the Acropolis and Perpendicular Bluff.
