Victoria is also a stronghold of rock climbing in Australia, and
one of its most important mountaineering centres is the tiny
settlement of Natimuk, near Mount Arapiles. The mountain itself is made of solid
Sand-stone rising up to 656 feet high and offers excellent climbs of all
standards, ranging from relatively easy ascents to the most difficult in the
country. Mount Arapiles is rivaled for the quality of its climbing by the
Grampians. A favorite route here among hard-core climbers is Mount Stapylton,
but it is just one of dozens of challenging climbs. The dramatic granite bluffs and slabs of Wilsons Promontory are
also popular, but the principal granite climbing area in the state is the Mount
Buffalo plateau. Dotted with enormous outcrops, it is also the site of
spectacular Buffalo Gorge, whose North Wall measures 853 feet and is one of
Victoria’s major climbing attractions.
