In many ways,
Queensland is ideal for sea kayaking. The water is
never very cold and there is a diverse range of coastal environments to
explore. However in the northern half of the state kayakers run
the risk of encountering deadly box jellyfish and the cyclones during summer,
and crocodiles throughout the year. One of the best places to sea kayak is Hinchinbrook Island,
between
Townsville and
Cairns, where there are beautiful beaches and waterfalls,
and you can enjoy spectacular views of the rugged island from the water. Cape
York is ideal for extended sea-kayaking expeditions, with the most challenging
options involving an island-hop through the Torres Strait Islands to Papua New
Guinea. Less difficult but equally rewarding are kayaking tours of the
Whitsunday Islands and further south, Fraser and Morton islands.
