Sea kayakers interested in birds should make for the Coorong, a
vast saltwater lagoon that extends 90 miles south-east from the mouth of the
Murray River. At the river mouth are Lake Alexandrina and its offshoot, Lake
Albert; both offer plenty of scope for sea kayaking in sheltered waters. Other
favourite destinations include the mangrove inlets of Port Adelaide and the
coast north of Cape Jervis, at the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Further west, two national parks at the southern end of the Eyre Peninsula offer
great sea kayaking. Coffin Bay National Park encompasses a T-shaped peninsula.
On its north-eastern side is a large, sheltered bay with a convoluted coastline
that is ideal for exploring by sea kayak; the exposed southern and western
shores will entice more adventurous paddlers. Lincoln National Park, to the
east, which protects the Jussieu Peninsula, also has a scenic, complex coastline
of beaches, cliffs and bays, as well as the added attraction of several adjacent
islands.
