Running right through the island of Fish Rock, Fish Rock Cave presents a truly unique experience for divers. The thrill of entering a 125 metre long cave and traveling right through the centre of a small island is one dive that you will not want to miss. As well as the cave itself, Fish Rock is home to such an amazing array of marine life that you will easily understand how the island came to be named. The is a dive location that must be included in your dive itinerary! Voted among the top ten dives in Australia, Fish Rock is located just a over a kilometre off Smoky Cape at South West Rocks on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. Created by a fault in the island, Fish Rock Cave runs from the deeper seaward entrance at 24 metres 125 metres through the rock emerging into the blue, fish filled, silhouetted shallower entrance fringed by pink gorgonian corals at 12 metres. Fish Rock is home to an unbeatable combination of very special marine creatures. As the closest dive site on the east coast of Australia to the Continental Shelf, visibility of up to 40 metres is not uncommon and the mixing of tropical species brought in by the warm, blue currents with the expected blend of temperate marine life has produced an absolutely unique underwater experience. On a dive trip to South West Rocks and Fish Rock, expect to dive with friendly turtles (all year round), grey nurse sharks (especially April - November) and masses of schooling fish which feed in the passing currents. Expect to see schools of pelagics, giant Queensland grouper, rare black coral gardens, anemones, clownfish, shells, lionfish, lobsters, large stingrays, migrating humpback whales, there's just too much to list so you'd better come and see it for yourself.
