Although it snows in
Tasmania every winter, the areas suitable
for skiing are relatively few. Ben Lomond is the island’s
principal downhill ski resort, with eight lifts, while Lake Dobson in Mount
Field National Park has more limited alpine skiing facilities. These two
locations are the best places on the island for ski touring. Ben Lomond is also
a venue for ice-climbing, an exciting form of mountaineering on frozen
waterfalls that is as yet in its infancy in
Tasmania. Hiking to these vertical
ice formations through snow-covered scrub can often be almost as challenging as
the climbing itself.
